The chapter provides international companies, investors and business decision-makers with a practical overview of Egypt’s legal and regulatory framework. It addresses the principal requirements for establishing and operating a business in the country, together with recent developments affecting investment and commercial activity.
A Practical Overview of Doing Business in Egypt in 2026
The Egypt chapter is divided into two complementary sections: Law and Practice, and Trends and Developments.
The Law and Practice section explains the principal legal considerations for companies establishing or operating a business in Egypt. It covers:
- Egypt’s legal system and judicial framework;
- restrictions and approvals applicable to foreign investment;
- commonly used corporate vehicles and incorporation procedures;
- employment regulations under the New Egyptian Labour Law;
- tax, customs and investment incentives;
- merger control and competition requirements;
- intellectual property protection;
- personal data protection and cybersecurity; and
- anticipated legal and regulatory reforms.
The Trends and Developments section examines recent changes affecting companies and investors in Egypt. These include developments relating to foreign investment regulation, private free zones, employment law, merger control, fintech, non-banking financial services, data protection, banking and foreign exchange controls, and importation requirements.
Together, the two sections offer practical insight into Egypt’s evolving business environment and the legal considerations that companies should assess when entering, operating in or expanding within the Egyptian market.
Supporting Investment and Business Expansion in Egypt
Egypt continues to develop its investment framework and introduce new regulatory measures. Consequently, companies entering or expanding in the market need to assess how these developments may affect their proposed activities, corporate structures and employment arrangements.
Businesses should also consider the potential implications for transactions, regulatory approvals and ongoing compliance obligations.
SH&P’s contribution draws on the firm’s experience advising multinational companies, investors, and public and private sector entities. The firm supports clients establishing and conducting business in Egypt across a wide range of regulated industries.
SH&P also contributed to the previous edition of the Chambers Doing Business in Egypt Global Practice Guide.
