Update: Prime Minister Announces Weekly Remote Work Policy

On March 28, 2026, during a press conference, the Egyptian Prime Minister, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, announced the implementation of a remote working policy to be observed every Sunday, effective as of April 2026, applicable for both the public and private sectors.

As of this date, no formal decree has been published in the Official Gazette in this respect.

This announcement was introduced in alignment with the measures adopted by the Egyptian Government aimed at reducing energy consumption in light of the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The Prime Minister clarified that the policy shall apply to government entities, as well as to employers in the public and private sectors, subject to certain exceptions for vital facilities that cannot operate remotely. Such exceptions include, inter alia, factories, public utility services, water and gas stations, wastewater treatment plants, hospitals, and other essential services.

With respect to the education sector, the Prime Minister announced that following coordination with the Ministers of Education and Higher Education—that the remote working system will not be applied to schools or universities. This decision is based on the relatively short remaining duration of the academic year, estimated at approximately six (6) weeks, and aims to avoid any potential disruption to the educational process.

According to the announcement, all other public and private sector entities are expected to comply with the remote working arrangement on a weekly basis every Sunday.
